SiriusXM All Access vs Platinum: What Actually Changed (And What Didn’t)

Confused about SiriusXM All Access vs Platinum? You’re probably staring at your billing statement wondering if you got a different plan—or if something changed without you noticing. Good news: this post clears up exactly what happened, what you’re getting now, and whether your current plan is actually worth the price.

The Short Answer: All Access and Platinum Are the Same Thing

SiriusXM didn’t swap your channels. They swapped the name.

On July 26, 2021, SiriusXM officially rebranded its entire subscription lineup. All Access became Platinum. Select became Music & Entertainment. Premier Streaming became Streaming Platinum. Same content, new labels.

The goal? Make the tiers feel more modern and easier to understand—similar to how tech and streaming companies name their plans today.

Here’s the full name swap breakdown:

No channels disappeared. No hardware changes happened. If you had All Access before, you woke up the next day with Platinum and everything still worked exactly the same.

What the Platinum Plan Actually Includes

So now that you know Platinum = All Access, here’s what you’re actually paying for.

Satellite + App, Both Included

Platinum works two ways. First, it activates your in-vehicle satellite radio—whether that’s a factory-installed receiver or an aftermarket unit. That signal covers the contiguous 48 states, D.C., and Puerto Rico, no cell service required.

Second, it gives you full access to the SXM app on your phone, tablet, smart TV, gaming console, and smart speakers like Amazon Alexa or Google Home. One subscription, every screen.

Ad-Free Music Across Every Genre

Platinum includes a massive, ad-free music library with real human programmers—not just algorithms. You also get dedicated artist channels for names like The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, the Grateful Dead, and Eminem’s Shade 45.

Here’s a quick look at what’s available:

CategoryExample Channels
Pop & HitsSiriusXM Hits 1, PopRocks, Pop2K, Disney Hits
Decades70s on 7, 80s on 8, 90s on 9
CountryThe Highway, B.B. King’s Bluesville
Talk & ComedyConan O’Brien Radio, Netflix Is A Joke Radio, Doctor Radio

Live Sports: Every Major League

Sports fans are a huge reason people keep Platinum. Your subscription covers:

  • NFL play-by-play on every game
  • MLB, NBA, and NHL live broadcasts
  • NASCAR, PGA TOUR, and major NCAA conferences
  • 24/7 sports talk on channels like Mad Dog Sports Radio and SiriusXM NFL Radio

Howard Stern—Still the Crown Jewel

Platinum unlocks Howard 100 and Howard 101, both running 24/7 with live shows, classic archives, and celebrity interviews. Through the app, you also get access to Howard Stern video—in-studio performances, live musical sets, and exclusive interviews.

In December 2025, Stern signed a new three-year extension with SiriusXM, keeping him on the platform through 2028. That means this exclusive content isn’t going anywhere soon.

Pandora Stations Built Around Your Taste

After SiriusXM acquired Pandora, they built personalized radio stations directly into the Platinum app experience. You can create custom, ad-free stations based on artists, songs, or genres you love. It bridges the gap between curated satellite radio and the algorithmic streaming you’re used to from Spotify or Apple Music.

Platinum vs. Music & Entertainment: The Real Difference Now

This is where things get interesting—and a little blurry.

Historically, the big gap between All Access (Platinum) and Select (Music & Entertainment) was simple: Select didn’t include Howard Stern or NFL play-by-play. That was it. You paid less, you got less.

But according to recent subscriber reports, the core audio channel lineup between Platinum and Music & Entertainment has largely merged—especially for users on the newer SXM radios or the app. M&E subscribers can often access Howard Stern and select sports broadcasts now.

So what actually separates the two plans today?

FeaturePlatinumMusic & Entertainment
Satellite Delivery
SXM App Access
Ad-Free Music
Howard Stern✅ Universal⚠️ Hardware-dependent
Major Sports Play-by-Play✅ Universal⚠️ Hardware-dependent
Pandora Artist Stations
Nugs.net Concert Access✅ 5,000+ shows
Merchandise Discount✅ 30% off
Standard Monthly Price$31.99$25.99

The bottom line: if you downgrade to M&E and your car has newer hardware, you might barely notice an audio difference. But you’ll immediately lose Pandora personalization, the Nugs.net library, and the merch discount. SiriusXM has shifted Platinum from a “content unlock” plan to a “premium ecosystem” plan.

Streaming Platinum: For People Without a Satellite Radio

Don’t have a satellite receiver? Don’t need one. Streaming Platinum is the app-only version of the top tier—same content, no hardware activation.

You get Howard Stern, all the sports, Pandora stations, and every music channel. The catch? You stream through your phone. In the car, that means connecting via Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, or Android Auto.

The big upside: the price drops to $11.99 per month. There’s even a student rate at $9.99 per month.

If you already subscribe to Streaming Platinum and want to add a satellite radio in your vehicle, you’d need to upgrade to the full Platinum plan.

Platinum VIP: When One Car Isn’t Enough

Platinum VIP is SiriusXM’s premium-tier offering, launched the same day as the Platinum rebrand in July 2021. It’s currently priced at $46.99 per month and solves a specific frustration: the one-stream limit.

Here’s what you get beyond standard Platinum:

Two vehicles, two streams. Platinum VIP activates satellite radio in two separate vehicles on one bill. It also allows two concurrent SXM app logins simultaneously—no more “Continue listening on this device?” interruptions when someone else opens the app.

OmniSecure safety features. This is a smartphone-based safety app included free with Platinum VIP. It uses your phone’s sensors and GPS to offer:

  • Crash Detection (Accident Aid+): Detects sudden deceleration from collisions and dispatches emergency services
  • SOS Button: One-tap connection to a live response agent
  • Connect Map: Real-time location sharing for family members
  • Roadside Assistance: Direct dispatch for tow trucks or locksmiths

Liberty Mutual insurance quotes. VIP members get access to exclusive auto and home insurance quotes through a partnership with Liberty Mutual, including multi-car discounts.

30% off SiriusXM merchandise. A standing discount at the official SiriusXM store.

Priority customer care. VIP members skip standard call queues and reach specialized agents faster.

VIP event access. Think intimate acoustic studio sessions with artists or suite access at INDYCAR races.

The Nugs.net Integration: A Big Deal for Concert Fans

Both standard Platinum and Platinum VIP include access to Nugs.net through your SXM app login. Nugs.net is a streaming platform dedicated entirely to soundboard-quality live concert recordings.

Your Platinum subscription unlocks 5,000+ live shows from artists like Phish, Metallica, Pearl Jam, the Grateful Dead, and Wilco. You can stream on-demand or save recordings for offline listening.

Here’s the fine print: a full standalone Nugs.net subscription ($14.99/month) gives access to 30,000+ shows, live-streamed concerts, lossless audio options, and video archives. Your Platinum access is a curated subset—you won’t get the complete library, video streams, or the 15% discount on pay-per-view events that standalone subscribers receive.

Still, 5,000 soundboard recordings is a genuine bonus for any live music fan. It’s a meaningful differentiator over the M&E plan.

The 2026 Price Increase (And the Royalty Fee Explained)

SiriusXM announced a systemwide price increase effective February 24, 2026. Every major audio plan sees a rate adjustment—Platinum VIP, Platinum, Music & Entertainment, Music Showcase, and both Streaming plans.

The increase hits military discount subscribers too. You keep your percentage discount, but the baseline price goes up, so your bill still rises.

One smart detail: the increases don’t hit all subscribers at once. SiriusXM rolls them out at each individual account’s renewal date. If you’re on a promotional rate, your locked price holds until that promo expires.

What’s the U.S. Music Royalty Fee?

Every SiriusXM plan with music channels includes a separate U.S. Music Royalty Fee tacked onto your base price. This isn’t a hidden fee—it’s a legally required pass-through cost.

Unlike traditional AM/FM radio, federal law requires SiriusXM to pay performance royalties directly to recording artists and labels. They also pay songwriters through performance rights organizations like ASCAP and BMI. The royalty fee covers those costs.

Coinciding with the February 2026 base price increase, SiriusXM is actually lowering the royalty fee percentage:

  • Satellite plans (Platinum, M&E): Drops from 21.4% to 19.98% of the base price
  • Streaming-only plans (Streaming Platinum): Stays at 8.8%

Here’s the catch: even though the percentage drops, your base price is going up. Your total monthly bill may still increase slightly. SiriusXM captures more net revenue while the lower royalty percentage softens the visual sticker shock.

The One-Stream Limit and How to Work Around It

Standard Platinum accounts allow one active app stream at a time. If your partner opens the SXM app on their phone while you’re streaming on an Alexa speaker, the speaker cuts off immediately.

Your satellite radio in the car runs separately—that doesn’t count toward the stream limit. But two app devices at once? Nope.

If you want two simultaneous streams without paying for Platinum VIP, there’s a workaround using Amazon Household: create a second Amazon adult profile, attach a separate SiriusXM subscription to that profile, and use “Alexa, switch accounts” to manage playback. It works, but it requires two full paid subscriptions.

SiriusXM designed this friction intentionally. They’d rather you buy Platinum VIP than share one login across the house.

Is Platinum Worth It Over Music & Entertainment?

If your car has newer SXM hardware and you mostly listen to music and sports in the vehicle, you might genuinely get away with M&E and notice very little difference. That’s the honest truth.

But if you use the app heavily, love live music archives, want Pandora personalization, or run SiriusXM across multiple devices in your home—Platinum earns its $6/month premium over M&E.

And if you have two cars and a household of listeners? Platinum VIP stops making sense to debate and starts making financial sense to actually buy.

One last tip: before you pay full price for anything, call SiriusXM and threaten to cancel. Retention deals frequently get Platinum down to $5–$7/month for 12-month terms. The promotional system is flexible—use it.
