Isuzu originally held 60% ownership and led the core engine architecture. GM focused on fuel injection calibration, electronics, and emissions compliance. The result was the legendary 6.6-liter Duramax V8 (LB7), which debuted in the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra HD trucks.
That engine worked spectacularly. GM’s heavy-duty diesel market share shot from three percent to thirty percent almost overnight. The Duramax name became synonymous with Isuzu engineering in the minds of American truck buyers — and that association never fully faded, even after everything changed.
How the Partnership Quietly Unraveled
The joint venture gradually shifted in GM’s favor. By 2002, GM had increased its DMAX stake to 60%. In 2006, GM sold its direct equity stake in Isuzu Motors entirely.
