Chain “stretch” is actually microscopic pin-and-roller wear across hundreds of individual links. Two factors dramatically accelerate that wear in the EcoBoost:

Fuel dilution: Direct injection sprays fuel straight into the combustion chamber, bypassing the intake tract. Trace amounts of raw fuel slip past the piston rings into the crankcase, thinning the oil. Degraded oil then acts like a grinding compound against chain pins.

Turbo heat: The twin turbos push oil temperatures beyond what conventional intervals can handle. As oil breaks down, hydrocarbon soot accumulates in suspension — and runs through the timing chain continuously.

Because the primary chain is so long, even microscopic wear at each link compounds into significant overall elongation.

EcoBoost Gen 1 Diagnostic Codes

The most common code is P0016 — a crankshaft-to-camshaft correlation error on bank one. You may also see P0017, P0018, and P0019 as the deviation spreads. In severe cases, retarded timing prevents the turbos from spooling correctly, triggering a P0299 underboost code alongside noticeable power loss.

Ford addressed the widespread Gen 1 chain issue through TSB 18-2305, covering 2011–2015 F-150 models built on or before May 29, 2015. The bulletin requires a specific diagnostic check: if the variable camshaft timing parameter shows an advance of +6 degrees or greater, the primary chain needs full replacement along with all four camshaft phasers.

3.5-Liter EcoBoost Gen 2 (2017–Present): Phaser Rattle

Ford fixed the chain stretch problem in 2017 by switching to two shorter, thicker primary chains — one per cylinder bank. This dramatically reduced the compounding wear effect. Ford also added port fuel injection alongside direct injection to wash carbon off the intake valves and keep the oil cleaner.

But a new problem appeared: the camshaft phaser locking pins.

How the Gen 2 Phaser Rattle Works

When you shut off a Gen 2 EcoBoost, oil drains out of the upper valvetrain. The camshaft phasers rely on a small internal locking pin to hold the rotor in its base position with no oil pressure.

The pins in early Gen 2 phasers wore out prematurely. After sitting overnight, the pins would fail to hold the rotor. On cold start, the camshafts would oscillate violently until oil pressure finally arrived — usually two to five seconds later. That violent movement creates a loud metallic ticking or rattling from the front top of the engine.

It starts. It rattles for a few seconds. Then it stops completely. If that description matches your truck, you likely have the Gen 2 phaser issue.

Ford’s Fix: TSB 23-2143

Ford released TSB 23-2143 covering 2017–2020 F-150 models (plus 2018–2020 Expedition and Navigator) built on or before November 30, 2019.

The fix requires replacing all four camshaft phasers — both intake and exhaust on both banks. The updated phasers use a “cap over spring” internal design that prevents pin dislodging. Look for part numbers ending in “CD” (HL3Z-6256-CD for intake, HL3Z-6C525-CD for exhaust). Since these updated phasers went into production, cold-start rattle reports on late-model EcoBoosts dropped sharply.

The phaser bolt sequence is a four-step process: torque, loosen, re-torque, then rotate. Skipping any step means the bolt doesn’t stretch to its yield point — and it will back out.

One More Thing: Replace the Water Pump Too

While the front cover is off, the water pump is fully exposed. On the F-150’s longitudinal engine layout, the water pump mounts externally on the front cover and runs off the serpentine belt. A failing pump leaks onto the ground rather than into the oil — which is the good news.

The practical news: since you’re already paying for 12+ hours of labor to remove the front cover, replacing the water pump at the same time adds a small parts cost but zero additional labor. Skipping it and having the pump fail six months later means paying the full labor bill again.

A partial repair creates two full-price repair bills. Don’t replace only the chain and leave original phasers in place. Don’t swap the phasers and leave old tensioners. Everything fails together — replace everything together.

How to Prevent This Repair in the First Place

Both the 5.4 Triton and the EcoBoost are hypersensitive to oil quality. The variable valve timing systems and hydraulic tensioners act as early-warning systems for your lubrication health. Neglect the oil, and they fail.

Change your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Ignore Ford’s extended interval recommendations for turbocharged applications. Degraded, fuel-diluted oil is the primary accelerant for timing chain wear in both engine families.

Use full-synthetic oil that meets Ford’s specifications. Synthetic oil handles turbo heat far better than conventional oil. It resists thermal breakdown and maintains the viscosity that hydraulic tensioners need.

Listen on cold starts. A brief one-second clatter on startup is normal — that’s the oil pump pressurizing. A harsh metallic rattle lasting two to five seconds means your tensioners can’t hold pressure, or your phaser locking pins are failing. Catching this symptom early can prevent a loose chain from shattering the plastic guides and sending debris into the oil pan.
